Album ini merupakan jejak tapak awal karir sukses Queen. menyadari unsur Progressive rock yang terlalu pekat pada album sebelumnya menjadikan album Queen II kurang dapat sambutan, maka Queen merubah konsep album ke tiganya.
Sheer Heart Attack yang dikerjakan paska ambruknya Brian May saat tour america mendampingi Mott The Hoople, memunculkan hit Killer Queen. Pada album ini juga muncul trilogi Tenement Funster-Flick of the Wrist-Lily of the Valley yang dicover oleh Dream Theater pada bonus album Black Clouds & Silver Linings
Album ini juga memunculkan lagu early thrash metal Stone Cold Crazy.
